Checklist for an earthquake resistant structure

Earthquake tremors have nudged property owners and potential buyers to acknowledge the fact that we need to be ready and protect ourselves before another catastrophe takes place.

Here’s a quick takeaway to protect against earthquakes:

  • Checking soil data including bore-log profile
  • Asking for a geo-technical expert view on the soil condition for the total load of the structure(static and dynamic condition).
  • Checking structural designs of all structural elements like foundation, plinth beam connectivity, roof beams, slab, staircase, lift core and its connectivity, staircase, etc.
  • Giving special attention to the location of shear walls, design of shear walls and connectivity to the core structure
  • Assessing stiffness of infill walls to be calculated properly which greatly influences the frequency and time period of the structure in turn influences the design earthquake forces on the structure
  • Checking location of the overhead water tanks
  • Looking after connection details like beam-column joints need to be designed for desired ductility as per IS- 13920

However, it is important to mention here, that the above mentioned parameters are indicative only. The design parameters needs to be followed very strictly which varies with type of the structure. All the designs need to be validated by the expert structural engineer of repute. All the construction activities need strictly to be followed as per the design. Strict quality control measures needs to be adopted while safety during construction is of utmost importance and appropriate measures need to be adopted.
